Upgrades over the Summer

U-mail:

The U-mail system was upgraded to a new version of the server software. The upgrade went smoothly but as with all upgrades, some new hitches were introduced as well as improvements. The most noticeable changes are:

· The U-mail Web Access interface has a number of feature enhancements, most notably the addition of a spell checker, folder sharing, and improved navigation (e.g. most frequently used folders 1 click away).

· The addition of a calendar feature. The calendar is web-based and can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet. Basic features include event and task scheduling as well as the ability to check other calendars on the system (the calendar owner must share their calendar with you). The calendar is able to import files in iCal or XML formats only. It does not include a sync feature to tie into PDAs at this time.

· Mulberry users will see new folders within the shared area - individual's folders shared with "everyone" via U-mail Web Access automatically show up in Mulberry. Other e-mail clients require that you subscribe to the shared folders in order to view them but Mulberry does this automatically, I guess you'd say it's a feature!

· There have been some browser incompatibilities with the new U-mail Web Access, therefore, we recommend that you use Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. Do not use Netscape 6 or the AOL Internet Explorer.

U-web: Student Web Server

The process of transferring files to U-web was rewritten over the summer. The revised process uses FTP (file transfer protocol). The previous method required you to choose the files to be transferred one at a time, FTP allows you to send many files at once. Special software is used to FTP files. The labs in the Union and Library have WS_FTP for Windows and Fetch for the Macintosh. Copies of this software may be downloaded from the software archive at: http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/its/software_download. Instructions for using the software are located at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/uweb/pctutor/publish.html.
