Welcome to UND!
New arrivals to UND have many questions, some of them dealing with computers. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive here at the Computer Center, for additional information please see our web page at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC.
E-mail
How do I get an e-mail address? An account on U-mail, the general purpose e-mail host here at UND, may be activated via the web at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/email.html.
The following is a PowerPoint slide show of the activation process: Select here for the PointPoint show (To progress through the slides click the mouse button). If you qualify for an e-mail address provided by a college/department, please contact your college/dept computer support staff for details regarding those services.
How do I access my U-mail account?
U-mail may be accessed using any standard POP or IMAP client, e.g. Eudora, Netscape Messenger, & Outlook Express*. Configuration instructions are located on the Computer Center e-mail webpage
(http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/email.html).U-mail may also be accessed via the web (Messenger Express) at: http://und.nodak.edu.This method works from any computer on the internet, be it at a campus lab, at home, or on the road.
* If you use Outlook/Outlook Express, it is highly recommended that you run virus checking software since OE is a frequent target for transferring viruses. Virus software and information is located at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/virus/.
Does UND have dial-up services to access the Internet?
Yes it does. You will need a U-mail account to use the dial-up services. Instructions for configuring your dial-up software are located at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/Usernotes/UserIndex.html#internet. For further information see NewsBytes article: Remote Access - Internet Access from Home.
Can I have a web page here at UND?
U-web, the student web server, is available for currently enrolled students to post homework assignments, portfolios, and resumes. The first step in obtaining web space is to activate a U-mail account, then go to http://uweb.und.nodak.edu. U-web utilizes a custom interface for uploading and managing files, especially geared for beginners.
Faculty may have web space on the UNDInfo system (www.und.nodak.edu) for instructional purposes. Departmentsand organizations may also request space on the UNDInfo web server. Applications are located at: http://www.und.edu/computing/, choose Apply for Web space within the UND Home Page section.
Statistics
An NDUS (North Dakota University System) computer called abacus.nodak.edu is available for statistical analysis. SAS &SPSS are both installed on the system. You may request an individual accountby going through the online enrollment process at: http://enroll.nodak.edu. If you wish to request class accounts, accounts that are only active for the semester and have a generic login & password, see the instructionson page: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/abacus/abacus.html. Be aware that class accounts are removed at the end of the semester, students requiring access to an account for longer than that should apply for an individual account via the online enrollment process.
