Network Services has added more than 1,000 network connections in the last four months for a total of over 11,000 active information outlets on the UND campus. Nearly half of the Ethernet connections are now switched rather than shared media. A switched connection allows for full use of the bandwidth specified between the network interface card in the computer and the network access equipment. . Shared Ethernet has been reconfigured to support fewer users when possible and will continue to be replaced with switched as needs are identified and resources become available. On our campus 32 to 48 computers typically share bandwidth. The majority of links from the core network to academic and administrative buildings and to residence halls have been upgraded to 100 Mbps. We are planning to add gigabit (1000 Mbps) speeds in the campus core network to support the increasing demands of advanced applications.
DHCP is being used by approximately half of all campus users for dynamic IP address management allowing for ease of administration and efficient use of IP address space. New DHCP servers and software are being implemented for additional support and user tracking.
