Overview

The year 2000 date-related issues described below should not affect the overall performance of WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS.

Date-Related Assumptions

All dates that are displayed in WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS are dependent on the operating system. MS-DOS does not accept the entry of two-digit year values from 00-79, but it does accept two-digit year values that fall between 1980 and 1999. You can find a detailed description of how your version of MS-DOS handles dates at the Microsoft Web site: http://microsoft.com/technet/topics/year2k/product/product.htm.

To specify a year in the twenty-first century, you must enter a four-digit year value (2000 - 2099) into the operating system. To change the operating system date,
* While at the DOS prompt (C:\>), type: date and press ENTER.
* Enter a date in the format specified (MM-DD-YY). Type a two-digit year value between 00 and 79. You will receive the error message: Invalid date (The system does accept a two-digit year value between 80 and 99).
* While at the DOS prompt (C:\>), type: date and press ENTER.
* Enter a four-digit date in the format specified (MM-DD-YYYY). The system accepts and displays a four-digit year value between 1980 and 2099.

Document Summary Feature

The Document Summary Feature enables you to save information about a document that does not display or print with the document. Two options in the Document Summary are the Creation Date, and the Revision Date.

Creation and Revision Date Display Assumptions

WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS will only display two-digit year entries in the Document Summary Creation Date and Revision Date features, and will make the following assumptions when a two-digit year is entered: 00 - 79 = 2000 - 2079 80 - 99 = 1980 - 1999

Creation Date

The Creation Date is the date and time the document was originally created. You can edit the Creation Date if you wish. The Revision Date is the date on which the file was last saved. This date is derived from the operating system, and cannot be edited. You can use the Creation Date and/or the Revision Date to identify the document in a search. To access, enter or edit the Creation Date in the Document Summary feature:
* Access the Document Summary by typing SHIFT+F8, 3, 5.
* Select 1 for the Creation Date.
* Edit the Creation Date as needed. If the date is correct, proceed to Step d.
* Press ENTER.

Search by Creation Date

If you try to search by Creation Date in the File Manager (F5, ENTER, 9, 5, 5), you will only get results if the Creation Date has been set in the Document Summary (SHIFT+F8, 5, 3, 1). If you do not set it, the Creation Date will always match the operating system clock, and you will be unable to find the file within the File Manager. Workaround: You can search by the Revision Date without experiencing this difficulty.

Search by Revision Date
* Press F5. The bottom of the screen displays: Dir C:\WP51\*.* (C: represents the drive that contains the WordPerfect program.)
* Press ENTER to display the File Manager.
* Select: 9 Find; from the bottom of the File Manager screen.
* Select: 5 Conditions; from the Find menu. Select: 3 Revision Date - | From To from the Find: Conditions menu.
* Enter the dates you want to search between (MM/DD/YYYY) in the From and To fields.
* Press ENTER.

WordPerfect 5.1 automatically returns you to the File Manager list, and displays all the files with a Revision Date that falls between your search dates.

Date Format/Insert Date Feature

You can set the format for the Insert Date Features (Date Text, Date Code) to include a four-digit year value.

To select the format for the date
* Access the Date/Outline feature by typing SHIFT+F5.
* Select: 3 Date Format
* Select the desired date format, according to the examples (or enter: 3 1, 4) and press ENTER.
* Press ENTER again to return to the document.
To insert a Date Code
* Access the Date/Outline feature by typing SHIFT+F5.
* Select: 2 Date Code.

WordPerfect 5.1 inserts the date into your document, in the format you specified in Step 1. The next time you open this document, the Date Code will show the current date. To insert a date that does not automatically update, select 1 Date Text. This date, however, is derived from the operating system date, which means that you are only able to enter a date that falls between 1980 and 2099.
