Network Services continues to add network connections throughout campus with a total of well over 11,000 active information outlets on the UND campus. Plans are in progress to place gigabit (1000 Mbps) switches in the campus core network prior to the beginning of the Fall 2001 semester to support the increasing demands of advanced applications.
Wireless networking has become a hot topic on campus. Evaluations from two different vendors are currently being done with assistance from volunteering departments on campus. The advantages of mobile computing seem obvious, however the limitations also need to be understood as we plan for wireless. It is a fast changing technology that is just beginning to standardize for compatibility between vendors in support of features that are critical in a large university environment.
