U-mail: E-mail system at UND

by

Doris Bornhoeft

U-mail is the name of the e-mail system that is available for UND faculty, staff, and students.. U-mail provides e-mail via IMAP or POP mail clients such as: Mulberry, Eudora, Netscape, and Outlook Express. These addresses are typically the person's firstname_lastname@und.nodak.edu. Besides e-mail, they may also be used for dial-up authenticaton that allows individuals to dial into the UND modem bank to access the Internet.

Activation of U-mail accounts is done via a web page (http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/email.html). You will be able to activate your account if you are a student and have registered for classes at least a day or two ago or if you are full-time benefitted faculty or staff AND have received a paycheck in the most recent payroll. If you are part-time faculty or staff you will need to stop by the Computer Center offices at Upson II, room 366 to complete a form, once your information has been added into the database you will be able to activate your account. Upon completion of the activation process the address is ready to use.

One of the challenges of providing e-mail has been to have a full featured e-mail system that works within a lab/cluster setting. PINE works in such a setting but  handling attachments is quite a challenge. POP mail programs such as Eudora and Netscape have the features but don't work in a lab/cluster since mail is stored on the local microcomputer.

An advantage of this system is that it is IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol). This means that the mail is stored on the server (the UNIX host) but by using IMAP software the student is able to access the mail using a graphical (point & click) interface, even in a computer lab type setting.  Accessing this e-mail requires special software (IMAP or POP) since the e-mail address doesn't have a UNIX account associated with it, you can't telnet to it.

The North Dakota Higher Education Computer Network (ND-HECN) has purchased copies of IMAP software called Mulberry for computer labs and clusters. It is available for Windows95 and Macintosh. If you are a lab/cluster manager and would like a copy of Mulberry please contact Doris Bornhoeft at  doris@sage.und.nodak.edu. Individuals with their own computers connected to the Internet may use programs such as Eudora, Outlook Express, and  Netscape or download Mulberry from the Computer Center Software web page. Instructions for configuring these e-mail clients is available.

Training sessions will be offered at the beginning of the semester. The schedule will be announced via the University Letter and on the Computer Center web page, CCinfo (http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC). Documentation re: Mulberry is also available on CCinfo.
