The end of construction in the Memorial Union Basement is near, and it is almost time for us to open our new facility! This long awaited event will consolidate three separate rooms, located on the second floor of the Memorial Union, into one user-friendly space located in the lower level of the Memorial Union.
The renovated space will allow students, faculty, and staff to have help from student lab assistants, literally at their fingertips. The new facility will also bring more machines and new services. In the three second floor rooms currently used as computer labs, we have 29 IBM Compatible computers and 17 Macintosh Computers, along with 1 Epson Scanner connected to one of the Macintosh machines.
The consolidated facility will allow us to have a total of 78 computers. This is a substantial increase in the number of computers available. The e-mail and Internet machines on the 3rd floor of the Memorial Union will remain in the same location, and will continue to serve the same purpose. If all goes well, we will be adding a few more machines there as well.
Plans for the new space also include adding another scanner connected to an IBM compatible computer. Additionally, CD-ROM burners are a work-in-progress for the Fall 1999 semester. The opportunity to reserve a Macintosh or IBM compatible classroom, for instructional purposes still exists, but with the benefit of brand new machines in each.
We look forward to serving the University Community's computing needs with this new facility.
