Network Services welcomes you back. We are proud to announce upgrades to our campus core network, new and additional network access areas, and Internet2 connectivity. The campus core network has been upgraded to ATM 155Mbps. We are in the process of implementing a fast Ethernet 200Mbps backup network. The majority of links from the core network to the academic, administrative, and residence halls have been upgraded to 100Mbps full duplex. Network access points within the buildings are or have been upgraded to 10Mbps/100Mbps switched connections. Residence hall rooms cabled for network connectivity is installed to the 10Mbps Ethernet network. These enhancements should relieve congestion and allow the deployment of highspeed applications.

New Ethernet 10Mbps/100Mbps network access points supporting mobile laptop computing have been installed in the Memorial Union conference rooms and open areas by the basement lab, also in Medical Science North atriums and lab areas. To utilize these network connections you need an Ethernet card, connectivity software and have your software defined to use DHCP services. For assistance contact the Computer Center Help Center at 7-2222.

University of North Dakota Computer Center announces Internet 2 access!

What is Internet 2? Internet2 (I2) is a collaborative effort to develop advanced Internet technology and applications vital to the research and education missions of higher education. Over 150 U.S. Universities, working together with partners in industry and government, are leading the Internet2 project. Internet2 is working to enable applications, such as telemedicine, digital libraries and virtual laboratories that are not possible with the technology underlying today's Internet. As a project of the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID), the Internet2 project is not a single separate network, but rather joins member network application and engineering development efforts together with many advanced campus, regional, and national networks. Additional information about Internet 2 can be found at www.internet2.edu and www.internet2.edu/html/faqs.html

How do I access I2? Internet2 is a high-speed network providing connectivity between PC's, servers, test equipment and services at I2 member institutions and industry partners. The use of Internet2 will be automatic anytime you connect to the above services. The same software such as web browser, email, telnet, ftp, etc., you currently use to connect to I1 sites will be used for I2, unless the application you are connecting to require special software. The network is setup to automatically route the traffic destined to an I2 site.

How do I get access to the network? If you have no current access to our network, call our Helpdesk at 777-2222 and request connectivity. The helpdesk will fill out an online form and it will be distributed to Network Services staff automatically. If you have network access and need additional connections, fill out an online request form located at www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/network/online.html. Each request will be evaluated to determine if cabling and/or equipment is needed and if the connection is feasible.

For any additional network information access our web site at www.und.edu/dept/CC/network.
