GroupWise Backups, What are they used for?
by
Tracy Uhlir and Bob Moeckel
Although the GroupWise server is backed up daily, it is not a means by which to restore specific
user files. These backups are used for catastrophic reconstruction of the system. The procedure
used is an automatically scheduled process that runs every 24 hours. It takes a snapshot of the
files at the time of the backup. The restoration process sets the complete mail system (All Users)
back to the time of the backup. If an individual user's files were restored to a previous date all
other users would also be restored to that date.
What can a user do if the e-mail message is important and one can not afford to lose it? A
message and/or attachments may be saved to a separate file on a local or network drive for future use. Another
option is to archive the message and/or attachments using GroupWise. Instructions on these procedures are located
at the Computer Center Website http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/CC/grpwise/.
Safeguard your files and protect yourself! Since the GroupWise mail system presently has no individual file restoration capability, it is important for you to save or archive your messages.
