PPP Dial-Up Access Using a Macintosh with System 8.5+

Things you will need before you start:
An e-mail address on one of the following: U-mail, CAS, or the School of Medicine.
If you have not yet activated your U-mail account, visit the ITSS E-mail Information page: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/email.html

The following screen shots show the steps you will go through using the Internet Setup Assistant that comes with Mac OS 8.5+. Go to the Apple Menu, choose Internet Access, then choose Internet Setup Assistant.

Select Yes
Select Yes

Click the right arrow to continue. Note: Future steps will not repeat the instruction to click the arrow to continue, once you have read and entered any necessary information continue to the next screen.

Enter a name for the configuration: e.g. UND

Choose your modem from the list of modems and the appropriate Port. Note: if you have an iMac you will have an internal modem.

Enter the phone number (NOTE: if you do not live within the local calling area of Grand Forks you would accrue long distance charges for the time you are connected. It would be more economical to use an Internet Service Provider local to your area or one of the national services with toll free numbers and follow their instructions for accessing their service).

Enter your entire e-mail address for the name.

Enter the password associated with your e-mail account.

UND does not use a connect script, select No.

You will obtain your IP address from the modems on the UND end, therefore select No.

Enter the information indicated to the left.

Enter your e-mail address and password.

Once again enter your e-mail address.

For the hostname, enter the part after the @ sign in your address, for example jw_doe@und.nodak.edu would enter und.nodak.edu for the host name.

UND does not provide a news server, leave setting as is.

UND does not use a proxy server, select No.

You have now completed the setup, click Go Ahead.

Once you have completed the setup there are a number of ways in which you can make your connection.

Once your dial-up software has been configured and you have established a connection, you will need to use software to explore the Internet and use e-mail.
