PPP Dial-Up Access Using a Macintosh
with System 8.5+
Things
you will need before you start:
An e-mail address on one of the following: U-mail, CAS, or the School of Medicine.
If you have not yet activated your U-mail account, visit
the ITSS E-mail Information page: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/email.html
The following screen shots
show the steps you will go through using the Internet Setup Assistant that comes
with Mac OS 8.5+. Go to the Apple Menu, choose Internet Access,
then choose Internet Setup Assistant.

Click the right arrow
to continue. Note: Future steps will not repeat the instruction to click
the arrow to continue, once you have read and entered any necessary information
continue to the next screen. |

Enter a name for the
configuration: e.g. UND |

Choose your modem from
the list of modems and the appropriate Port. Note: if you have an iMac you
will have an internal modem. |

Enter the phone number
(NOTE: if you do not live within the local calling area of Grand Forks you
would accrue long distance charges for the time you are connected. It would
be more economical to use an Internet Service Provider local to your area
or one of the national services with toll free numbers and follow their
instructions for accessing their service).
Enter your entire
e-mail address for the name.
Enter the password
associated with your e-mail account.

UND does not use a
connect script, select No. |

You will obtain your
IP address from the modems on the UND end, therefore select No. |

Enter the information
indicated to the left. |

Enter your e-mail address
and password. |

Once again enter your
e-mail address.
For the hostname,
enter the part after the @ sign in your address, for example jw_doe@und.nodak.edu
would enter und.nodak.edu for the host name.

a news server, leave setting as is. |

UND does not use a
proxy server, select No. |

You have now completed
the setup, click Go Ahead. |
Once you have completed
the setup there are a number of ways in which you can make your connection.
Remote
Access from the Control Strip
then select the configuration name from the pop-up menu |

Access is a Control Panel located under the Apple Menu. Choose Connect. |

Once your dial-up software
has been configured and you have established a connection, you will need to use
software to explore the Internet and use e-mail.
To obtain an Internet browser (i.e. Netscape Navigator) or
E-mail software (i.e. Eudora Light, Mulberry) see:

Note: The information you
entered into the Internet Setup Assistant is stored in the Remote Access and
Internet Control Panels. If you need to make any changes (e.g. you change the
password on your e-mail account so you have to change it for your dialup) you
may do so within those Control Panels.
