SUPERVISION OF
EMPLOYEES
The supervisor is
responsible for establishing a clearly defined work schedule which is compatible
to the time requirement of both the student and the employer. According to
federal regulations, a student may not work during a scheduled class period.
The work performed by
employees must be properly supervised. The employer should expect the student
employee to work hours scheduled and to perform satisfactorily those tasks which
are assigned. If the student employee does not perform as expected, (s)he may be
dismissed. Review the
dismissal procedures for more information.
STUDENT EVALUATIONS
Written evaluations of student employees are not mandatory. However, it is
suggested that students are informed either formally or informally how they are
performing. It is important for employees to know they are doing a good job, and
equally important to know where improvement might be necessary.
If a student's job
performance is inadequate, the evaluation form may be used as a method of
pinpointing areas which need improving. It is also a time to reinforce
expectations and give fair warning if dismissal is a possibility.
At some time in the
future any student employee may use the department or agency as a reference. If
a few months or years have passed, personnel may have changed. Without a written
record, a recommendation may be lost to that former employee. Therefore, we
suggest something in writing be kept in the files for future reference. Also,
any written documentation may be beneficial to the department if the student
should file a grievance.
FERPA (Family Educational
Right to Privacy Act) requires a written release of information specific to each
individual request for job recommendation or performance evaluation. Student
employment records are considered a part of the educational record and can not
be released without written consent. |
