Veteran Services > Chapter 1606 Benefits

 

Eligibility

Members of the Selected Reserve, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Reserves, the Army National Guard, and the Air Guard are eligible for MGIB-SR (chapter 1606). The Reserve and Guard components decide who is eligible for the program. VA makes the payments for training.

Eligibility Requirements are:

  • A 6-year obligation in the Selected Reserves
  • Complete Initial Active Duty for Training.
  • Meet the requirements for a high school diploma or equivalency certificate before applying for benefits.
  • Remain in good standing in a Selected Reserve Unit.

To apply

To apply for Chapter 1606 benefits, the student needs to fill out an Application for VA Educational Benefits, 22-1990. This form can be picked up at the Veteran Services Office, a link is provided on the left of this page under 'forms',  or can be downloaded from http://www.gibill.va.gov/. Also needed is a copy of the Veteran’s DD-2384 Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) papers, Kicker paperwork (if applicable), and a copy of the student’s schedule.

Benefits

Chapter 1606 students are eligible for benefits for 36 school months at the following rates, based on number of credits enrolled in school (the following numbers are based on an academic school year):

Direct Deposit

Direct Deposit is available for Chapter 1606 recipients. To receive your check through direct deposit, please bring a voided check into the Veteran Services Office or you can call St. Louis directly (1-888-442-4551) with your routing number and account number for the account you want your check deposited into.

Flight Training

If you are interested in using your benefits for flight training, please contact Mike Krotz at 777-7847. *You cannot receive flight training reimbursement and monthly benefits at the same time.

National Guard/Reserves Tuition Assistance

If you are receiving the National Guard or Reserves Tuition Assistance (Waiver), please contact Student Account Services for further information on that program (701-777-3911).
