REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS

Accommodations are typically changes in how a task or activity is accomplished. A ”reasonable” accommodation does not compromise academic standards or course requirements nor create an undue burden for either party.

At UND, Disability Services for Students is responsible for determining reasonable accommodations. This is done on a case-by-case basis and depends on the nature and extent of the student’s disability and the essential requirements of each course or activity.

THE REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION PROCESS

1. The student registers with DSS, which includes providing documentation of disability that verifies the need for accommodations.


2. The Disability Specialist (DS) , in discussion with the student, identifies the accommodations the student will request, based on the functional limitations of the disability.


3. The DS provides the student with a verification of accommodations form that describes the student’s functional limitations and lists the accommodations needed.


4. The student meets with the professor to request the specific accommodations and works out the details of implementing them.


5. The DS is available to consult and assist with problem solving with the professor and student. and to assist with problem solving, if requested.

ACCOMMODATION RESPONSIBILITIES

Self-identify to Disability Services for Students (DSS) when requesting accommodations.	Hold students with disabilities to the same academic standards as students without disabilities. Meet with a Disability Specialist to determine which accommodations the student will use.	Provide or allow reasonable accommodations.	Provide or arrange accommodations.
Contact professors (after seeing a Disability Specialist) to request and arrange the approved accommodations.	Refer students who report they have or are suspected of having a disability to DSS.	Consult and advise faculty on accommodations and adjustments in teaching methods
Manage the accommodations and follow DSS policies and procedures.		House disability records and protect students’ right to privacy and confidentiality.
Arrange for any personal services, such as attendant care or individually designed adaptive technology.
