Disability Services for Students (DSS) provides instructional material in
alternate format(s) as an accommodation to students who have disabilities
that adversely affect the ability to utilize standard print materials.
alternate formats include large print, braille, cassette tape or electronic
text. Only required instructional material will be produced in alternate
format. Formatting of “Optional” or “Recommended” instructional material
should be discussed with the student’s Disability Specialist.
Students must give DSS adequate notice of their request for material in an
alternate format in order for DSS to provide it in a timely manner. Students
are also required to provide proof of purchase of the print materials when
requesting an alternate format.
It is the student’s responsibility to follow the DSS policy and procedures
regarding material in alternate formats. Failure to do so may result in the
accommodation being suspended until the student has contacted his/her
Disability Specialist and cleared up any concerns.

OBTAINING THE ACCOMMODATION
Register for classes during the advance
registration period if authorized by your Disability Specialist.
Requests made after advance registration will be considered but DSS may not be able to
provide the alternate format in the time frame you need.
Give DSS a copy of your class schedule with
the courses circled in which you are requesting alternate format, or email your request to your
Disability Specialist.
Notify DSS of your request as soon as you have registered.
If you use more than one alternate format, you may need to discuss your
request in more detail with your Disability Specialist.
Provide DSS with proof that you
purchased a print copy of the material(s) you requested in alternate format. Proof of
purchase must be an original receipt or charge that includes date of purchase, title of material,
and cost of material.
No alternate format material will be released until you have provided DSS with proof
of purchase unless you have made prior arrangements with your Disability Specialist.
Sign the DSS “Alternate Format Release Form.”
Pick up your material in alternate format at DSS.
Please store electronic text (disk, CD) in appropriate storage cases to prevent
damage.
Return your alternate format material to DSS when you are finished using them. If you do
not return them, you will be billed for them through the UND Business Office.
TROUBLE-SHOOTING
Notify DSS immediately if a problem arises, i.e. difficult to hear or understand, material
seems to be missing.
It is more difficult to correct a situation that has gone on for a period of
time so it is important to take immediate action.
