OPTIONS FOR SCHEDULING CLASSES AROUND
DISABILITY NEEDS
Some students may need to build in some flexibility regarding class attendance when scheduling
their classes. Disability related circumstances, such as chronic fatigue, frequent illness or
hospitalizations can interfere significantly with class attendance. UND does not require attendance
in most classes, however there are some courses in which in-class activities are required, e.g.
group presentations or graded class discussion. Having a disability does not necessarily
exempt the student from having to attend. DSS suggests the student find out if attendance
is graded and discuss the possibility of alternatives with the professor before enrolling
in the course. The student should consult with their Disability Specialist before approaching the
professor.
There are some alternatives to taking classes on campus that require attendance. The following
are options that may provide the needed flexibility to dealing with excessive absences:
Online and Correspondence Study Classes – Students can set
their own schedule, work at their own pace and choose the time and place for studying.
Taking classes without scheduled meetings gives the student control over when to do course work,
but it also puts demands on one’s ability to use time productively. Students need to decide whether
taking classes independently fit their work styles.
For a list of courses available at UND, contact Correspondence Study in the Division of Continuing
Education, 777- 2661 or online at: www.conted.und.edu/correspondence. For a catalog of distance education
courses offered at all the N.D. public colleges see:

On-campus classes that meet once a week, in the evening or for part of
the semester - These classes are listed in a separate section of the online class schedule.
See the UND Registrar’s homepage:

The Grand Forks Air Force Base offers courses from Lake Region State College, which transfer to UND.
Classes usually meet in the evenings. Contact the college at the Base Education Center 701 594-8192 or
online at: www.lrsc.nodak.edu/gfafb/.
Independent study courses – Find out if the academic department
has an independent study designation. In this course the student meets one on one with the professor.
Together they decide on the topic, course requirements and designate a few meeting times. This option
allows students the flexibility to schedule meetings when they are able.
On campus courses that do not require participation -
It’s important to find out the course requirements prior to enrolling by
talking with the professor.
