Teaching interests:

My philosophy of teaching is based on a dynamic and collaborative interaction where both the students and I have an oppotunity to learn from one another and engage in a critical analysis of the course materials. My teaching interests include multicultural counseling, counseling practicum, group theory, ethics, psychopathology/DSM-IV, and supervision.

Research interests:

My research interests, broadly defined, are in the areas of Black Psychology and Multicultural Psychology. More specifically, my research interests focus of racial oppression, internalized racial oppression, Liberation Psychology, and multicultural competencies development.

Currently, I am working to validate the Internalized Racial Oppression Scale (IROS) as well as to gain a qualitative understanding of individuals’ perceptions of internalized racial oppression. Additionally, I plan to assess the predictive ability of the IROS as it relates to various aspects of mental well-being and psychological distress. This gained understanding of internalized racial oppression will ultimately lead to the development of interventions that address this phenomenon.

In addition to the exploration of internalized racial oppression, I am also interested in learning how multicultural identity awareness and development can impact the multicultural competence acquisition of psychology graduate students.
