Why the University of North Dakota Choral Music Department?

One of the strengths of the Choral Music degree program at the University of North Dakota is the opportunity for hands on, practical experience. Choral Music students, in addition to their regular coursework, are provided numerous opportunities to develop skills in conducting, leadership, and management. Specifically, most conducting students will lead rehearsals, organize concerts and activities, direct ensembles in performance, and assume leadership roles within the various ensembles.

Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education (BM-CME)

The BM-CME is primarily directed at individuals who are interested in teaching music at the K-12 level. Anyone enrolled at UND who is interested in becoming a choral music teacher or conductor may select the BME-CME as his or her program of study. The degree can also be tailored for those interested in sacred music or who are planning to pursuing Master and Doctoral degrees in the future.

For those students interested in eventually teaching at the collegiate level or directing a professional choir, the BM-CME is highly recommended, although the BM in Vocal Performance, and occasionally the BM in Piano Performance, both coupled with an emphasis in conducting, might also be appropriate.
