Graduate Student Opportunities in
Dr. Richard Sweitzer's Laboratory
Beginning Academic Year 2001-2002
Dr. Sweitzer is recruiting 1-2 new graduate students. In addition to Teaching Assistantship support in the Biology Department, support for several research projects is possible.
Project 1: Significant research funds including 3 months/yr of summer salary for the next 3 years is available for a prospective student interested in developing a study related to the ongoing research on the effects of wild pigs on oak woodland ecosystems in California.
Project 2: Dr. Sweitzer is initiating a study of the population ecology of porcupines at Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota via a graduate student. A variety of equipment support for this study, including radiotelemetry equipment, are available. Logistical support and housing will be provided by Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Project 3: Funding is being pursued to initiate a large scale study of the diversity and abundance of terrestrial vertebrates in northern Great Plains tallgrass prairie habitat fragments. This study would initially focus on the diversity of medium and small mammals in tallgrass prairie reserves in relation to reserve size, degree of isolation, prior management history, and management of adjacent lands.
Depending on the situation, such as whether a prospective student has some well-developed ideas for a study, other projects may be possible. |
