Department of Biology

Esther Wadsworth Hall Wheeler Award. Applications for this award are evaluated on the basis of the merit of the graduate student's research question, the design of the research plan, and relevancy to both the big picture and potential applications. Graduate students currently enrolled in the Department of Biology at the University of North Dakota are eligible to apply. A single award of up to $1000 is made annually. The evaluation committee will include the donor and one faculty member from the UND Department of Biology.

Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award.
This award is to recognize a graduate student who, in the opinion of the faculty, performs the most outstanding research during the period July 1 to June 30.

Joe K. Neel Memorial Endowment in Limnology and Aquatic Invertebrate Zoology. This endowment was established in 1991 to recognize the contributions of Dr. Neel to the University of North Dakota Biology Department from 1966 until his retirement in 1981. Funds are available for one or more research awards to graduate students in the Biology Department who are pursuing research in the two main fields of Dr. Neel's expertise, limnology and aquatic invertebrate zoology. Each Spring, the Biology Department will solicit nominations from the faculty. Potential candidates will be evaluated and selected from the group of nominees.

Stella H. Fritzell Memorial Scholarship. This award is given annually to one student and alternates years between an undergraduate and graduate student. The awardee is expected to have an outstanding record in field biology and an interest in, and knowledge of, governmental affairs in environmental or natural resource management.

Student Research Stipends. Stipend awards are intended to encourage and to promote student (graduate and undergraduate) research in the biological sciences at the University of North Dakota by providing a supplemental source of funding for research-related activities. Students conducting research in biology with the supervision of a faculty member from the Biology Department shall be eligible for financial assistance.
