Primary Areas of Research Interest

At present, I am working on two distinct lines of research. Broadly defined, the research addresses rehabilitation services provision and outcomes with respect to (a) industrially based practice and (b) public sector vocational rehabilitation (VR). My research on industrially based practice focuses on the interaction of certified disability manager specialists and labor union personnel in the delivery of disability management services. Specifically, I am interested in examining disability managers’ perceptions of working collaboratively with union personnel, the relationship between union personnel’s participation in services and return to work outcome, and how union personnel can best participate in disability management services to enhance return to work efforts. My second line of research consists of studies to examine VR services availability, delivery, and outcomes with respect to consumers having mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or chemical dependence. I am especially interested in possible relationships between receiving extended VR services with specific health policy and client variables.

Secondary Research Interests

My secondary research interests involve clinical supervision and counselor characteristics. Specifically, I am interested in the possible relationship between counselor trainees’ developmental level and their attitudes regarding a variety of theoretical constructs including social desirability, authority/authoritarianism, and cynicism/hostility towards other people. I am also interested in the supervisory relationship and supervision best practice strategies.

Professional Experience

The bulk of my professional clinical experience has been in the areas of chemical dependency and private sector rehabilitation. In specific, I have professional experience providing substance abuse counseling services to adults, families, and adolescents at varying levels of care within both urban and rural service settings. Additionally, I have provided community mental health and rehabilitation counseling services to individuals experiencing barriers related to sever and persistent mental illness, chemical dependency, and developmental disabilities. I also enjoy providing consultation regarding worksite-based disability management programming and have worked with a variety of business and labor unions to facilitate development of work-site based disability management programming.
