Flowers often showy, regular, 5-merous, hypogynous

Calyx gamosepalous, herbaceous to variously membraneous

Corolla gamopetalous, salverform or tubular, may be slightly zygomorphic

Stamens 5, inserted on the corolla, alternate with its lobes

Pistil 1, ovary superior, 3-loculed, 3 style branches or stigmas

Fruit a loculicidal capsule (usually)
