Stems often tetragonal (4-sided)

Flowers mostly perfect, 4- or 5-merous, hypogynous

Calyx of fused sepals, may be irregular

Corolla of fused petals, slightly irregular to bilabiate

Stamens adnate to corolla, alternate with corolla lobes

Ovary superior, but not deeply lobed (compare with Lamiaceae)

Fruit a 2 or 4 seeded drupe, or 4 nutlets or achenes
